What’s Ecodesign 

Ecodesign refers to the integration of environmental aspects during the design phase (…) with the goal to reduce negative environmental impacts of products all along their life cycles without quality loss 

Product’s impact evaluation : Solidworks Sustainability

Thanks to SolidWorks Sustainability (integrate into Solidworks Premium) you can evaluate environmental impacts of a design throughout the product’s lifecycle design changes to minimize the impact and identify which components are the most offenders.

Open your assembly or your part and then, type « Sustainability » in the command terminal. Once it’s opened, you have various parameters to specify for each parts and sub-asemblies (material used, process, region of manufacturing, use and energy consumption, transportation, etc.)

Then, it generates 4 pie charts (representing 4 different environmental indicators) where you can see the impact of you products in each lifecycle phase. An additional function even helps you choosing an alternative materials according to mechanical properties you specify ! 

Sustainability in PCB World: Soluboard®- JIVA 

With 53.6 million tonnes thrown away, e-waste is now the world’s fastest-growing waste stream. As PCBA is one of its key components, this underlines the importance of recycling.  

In response to this growing need, Jiva has created Soluboard®, a PCB for easy components recycling. Its unique soluble structure allows dissociation in hot water, facilitating the efficient removal of electronic components for reprocessing. In addition, Soluboard® features a bio-composite structure with a significantly lower carbon footprint than glass fibers, while meeting the mechanical and electronic requirements of a wide range of electronic products

Print photovoltaic ink : Layer®- DRACULA TECHNOLOGIES  

Layer is an organic photovoltaic technology produced by printing. Module design, formulation of conductive inks, digital printing, encapsulation and characterization of photovoltaic modules are all carried out in Valence.  

Replacing batteries in IoT with the Layer module would reduce maintenance costs, carbon footprint, and make product more energy-efficient. In terms of mechanical properties, LAYER® is thin, light, flexible and its bifacial functioning makes it more efficient (it collects photons from both sides). Also, it’s a drop on demand process so there is less material wasted.  

Eco-design focus 

No Rare-earth element, high recyclability, sustainable energy source, waste reduction during production phase. 

Conclusion

Eco-design represents a necessity in the development of technological products, aiming to create sustainable products, thus reducing the negative impact on our environment.
